Richard had a dream. One day, families struggling in his community of Upper Dublin would have simple, affordable places to live. In his lifetime, he'd seen so many changes in the area and along with them housing options disappear for so many that great families that he knew in his church and in his neighborhood.
Richard also had a passion. He loved building and thought that perhaps the local Habitat affiliate might be able to use his skills. Richard and Habitat developed a long-standing relationship, with Richard helping build wherever they needed him. He eventually became a Board member as well, knowing that his expertise might help the small organization grow.
In his time with Habitat, they produced 1 to 3 homes per year and struggled at that pace. He helped where he could and they grew to produce 3 to 4 homes each year, but they still had not been able to build in Upper Dublin.
But Richard never forgot his dream. Every day of his life he imagined that one day, Habitat homes would be built in his community. In his lifetime, he did not get to see that dream come true, but thanks to his legacy gift given to Habitat, Richard dream is becoming a reality right now.
Richard planned for the eventuality that one day he wouldn't be able to make a difference with his time and talent. Even though he was gone, he could still help by providing his treasure so that families could become homeowners in his community, in the place that he lived and cared about for so many years.
When you are gone, what kind of legacy do you want to leave? For Richard, it was one of safe, decent affordable homes for all.
