Spread The Love

A couple of years ago, I was an adult leader for a high school retreat, and I was amazed when I heard one student leader, KJ, tell the whole room about the selfless giving of his friend Brian, another student in the room.  One such instance of this giving spirit was that Brian had suggested that he and his friends should volunteer at a soup kitchen on their day off from school – certainly not how most teenagers first think to spend a day off.

I found it so inspiring that I wrote my future self a letter to be opened and read for Valentine’s Day.  The letter’s contents are like this:

“Remember that love can be found and shared everywhere.  Regardless of whether there is romantic love in your life right now, you can find ways to spread love in the world.  Volunteer at a soup kitchen or local charity, surprise friends or family with a treat, or do an act of kindness for a stranger.  Valentine’s Day doesn’t need to be focused on the idea of a significant other.  Use the love in your heart to cultivate a culture of positivity for those who may be feeling lonely, forgotten, or lost.”

At Habitat, we work to spread this love every day in providing safe, affordable, decent housing for those we serve in the county.  We spread hope by completing “brushes with kindness” and neighborhood revitalization projects.  We help families build their futures through our Almost Home program.  And we are blessed in return through interactions with our wonderful Habitat families, volunteers, and donors.

Make this Valentine’s Day about spreading love for humanity.

Ways to spread the love with Habitat:

Volunteer:  Give the gift of your time in your community by volunteering on an HFHMC construction site or in our ReStore.  We are currently building at 3 homes in the Norristown and Pottstown communities.  Contact Cara, our Volunteer and Community Relations Manager, at cara@habitatmontco.org or 610-278-7710 ext. 114.

Recycle: Donate new or gently used household items to our ReStore, where they will be sold to the public at reduced, affordable prices.

Shop: Shop at the ReStore for your remodeling or redecorating needs!  All profits fund Habitat’s four programs: Homeownership, Critical Home Repair, Neighborhood Revitalization, and Almost Home.  You’ll walk away with items for a bargain price while knowing you helped families in need.

Give your car for a home:  Through Habitat for Humanity’s Cars for Homes program, you can donate a car, even if it’s no longer running, and the proceeds from recycling its materials will support your local Habitat affiliate.

Give financially:  If you would like to make a monetary donation to support HFHMC’s programs, click here to donate online, or visit our donate page for more information about ways to give.

May your heart be full this Valentine’s Day!
