Last month, Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity, passed away.  He was in his seventies but in good health up until his death so it was a bit of a shock to supporters of Habitat.  We are all deeply saddened by his passing, and will mourn his loss.

Even though I am sad, I can't help but be truly inspired by his life at the same time.  Here was a man who seemingly had everything - lots of money, power and status, but gave it up to work on behalf of those less fortunate than himself.  By giving up the material posessions of life, he became the richest man I know, building homes for others and encouraging millions of people along the way.

Millard's life was truly an inspiration to us all.  By travelling the country and then the world, with his single voice and his faith, he was able to mobilize an army "in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends." By believing with all his heart and soul that "homelessness is socially, politically and religously unacceptable in our nations of the world," Millard helped more than 1 million people (300,000 families) live in simple, basic, decent homes that they own.  Who among us can share an accomplishment like that?

These days, when I get tired of trying to swim upstream in a tough fundraising climate, I think of Millard in those early days, going from congregation to congregation, sharing this message.  He was up against enormous odds and didn't know how Habitat would develop, but with faith and passion, he changed lives.  I am truly inspired by him, because he never lost faith - he knew that the message he was sharing was one that would make the world a better place.

In this issue of Habichat, we will meet some other inspiring individuals and groups who have heard Habitat's call to action and are responding, changing lives along the way.

Christine and sons 2Christine

Christine and her boys, Jerry (19) and Khalil (14) have been working hard toward their goal and hope to become homeowners this summer.  Its been a long road for this family and one met with so many challenges that most people would have given up. Not Christine - she is a true testament to the power of faith and perseverance.

Until five years ago, Christine was raising her boys in Philadelphia.  When Jerry, the oldest, was born she lived in Germantown in a house so poisoned with lead paint that Jerry became very sick as a baby.  "Some of the highest levels in the city," Christine says, "the Dr. said that he was never going to mentally progress like normal."  Christine and her partner moved Jerry out of that house, but her troubles weren't over.

Christine worked as an LPN for years in Philly, but over the course of time, she began to feel weaker and less able to do her job.  Finally, after several respiratory issues, she decided to see a Dr. and was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis, a disease that causes inflammation most commonly found in major organs like the lungs.  Christine also has severe eye damage from the disease as well.  The disease takes its toll with boughts of pneumonia several times per year, and chronic, severe asthma, but she "never gives up" and has not given in to her condition.

Jerry and Khalil's Dad "had trouble with his hands - laying them on me and on the boys." When he attacked her, she put up with is because "I was sick so much, I felt stuck - like I had no place else to go."  When she learned that he was hurting her boys, she said that God gave her the courage and strength to leave.  One day, after a particularly scary incident where a bullet whizzed past Khalil's little head and through their living room window, Christine took her children and left.

She went to Laurel House, a safe haven for women needing a hand up.  There, she and children worked hard for 30 days, trying to get their lives in order.  "I didn't want to stay more than a month - I was determined I was going to make a life for my sons."

The next few years passed in a blur of several rented apartments in different communities, but Christine never let go of the dream that one day she would have a place to call her own. Jerry defied the odds and did well in school, telling his Mom that someday he was going to go to college and learn to "build her a house."

In 2004, Christine learned about the affordable housing program through the Montgomery County Housing Authority.  Because of some of the hard choices she had to make along the way, her credit was not the best and she didn't immediately qualify, so she began working hard to improve it.  She told her counselor there "any challenge you put before me, I will take it."  After a time, Christine cleaned up her credit but her income was too low to qualify for a home through their program.  The counselor was aware of Habitat and put Christine in touch with our office.  Christine felt like God had a hand in finding out about Habitat. "We can't do nothin' without God," she says.

Now, Christine lives in a rented apartment that has skunks under the crawl space and mice everywhere, but she is happy, because she knows that soon she will not have to live there any longer.  Jerry comes to the Habitat site almost every day to work.  He just applied to the Williamson School - a free trade school that is very well-respected. In fact, he just had his second interview!  Khalil goes to the neighborhood where their new home is located and picks up trash on the street with his Mom.  This family is more than ready to become Habitat homeowners.

Christine tells everyone here at Habitat that she "feels like she has died and gone to heaven four times, but God keeps sending me back, reminding me that it's real."  She "can't believe that a group of people would get together to do something for someone else."  Ironically, we feel like it is Christine who has given us a gift of faith, hope and inspiration at a time when we need it most.

When she moves in to her new home, the first thing she and her boys are going to do is plant lavender and rose bushes in honor of her mother who never gave up believing that Christine would not only survive, but thrive.

October 3, 2009 - Our 20th Anniversary Celebration Event will be held at the HomeSource Daily Expo, 660 Allendale Road in King of Prussia.  Tickets are $100 each or $150 per couple and all proceeds will go to support Habitat projects throughout our community.  If you are interested in attending or participating as a sponsor, please contact Marianne@habitatmontco.org

Support Habitat in Creative Ways!

There is always a silver lining! For Habitat it is a great time to be a mostly-volunteer organization!  We have many wonderful volunteers with lots of amazing skills coming out to help at every location, building our homes very quickly.

For those of you who have had trouble recently getting on the schedule to volunteer, please know that there are other ways to support Habitat that are just as important as swinging a hammer.  After all, more support means more projects and more projects mean more volunteer opportunities!

Some ideas to help Habitat further its mission throughout Motngomery County:
  • Host a fundraiser at your local restaurant. Local Applebee's, Texas Roadhouse, Saladworks and Baja Fresh will host evenings to benefit your favorite local charity (AKA Habitat!). Contact management at these restaurants to set up a fundraising event! Also ask your favorite local restaurants if they would host a Habitat night and give a portion of their proceeds to us.
  • Many of you work for organizations that will sponsor your volunteer day with a donation to Habitat - some include Merck, Verizon, Starbuck's, GSK and others.  Check with your HR Director to see if your company participates in a program like this.
  • Cans for Habitat - place one of our can bins (we can give these to you!) at your office or place of worship, fill it up, bring it to your local recycler to have it weighed, send the proceeds to Habitat. Habitat International will match everything we raise locally.
  • Get your kids involved!  Have a bake sale, car wash or penny drive for Habitat.  In the news recently, there was a piece about elementary students raising over $7 million dollars by collecting pennies! Imagine how many homes could be be built!
  • Host a party - have people leave a small donation for Habitat in lieu of a gift!

For more information about any of these ideas, contact Marianne@habitatmontco.org

  Staff Changes at Habitat

Linley KirkwoodFor those of you who may have missed it, Linley Kirkwood took Darcy Gallouedec's place last month as Community Outreach Coordinator.  Currently, Linley is a senior at Villanova University and co-president of their 1200 member Habitat club.  Linley brings with her a wealth of knowledge about Habitat both locally and around the world.  Until she graduates in May, Linley will be with us on a part-time basis, but will hit the ground running this summer.   Linley can be reached at linley@habitatmontco.org.

FurnitureConstruction Program Changes:
Rob Ripley has been promoted from Field Manager to Construction Manager.  Rob will supervise all day-to-day construction activities.  Paul Ricker continues to oversee the Construction Department returning to his original role of Project Manager.

Plant a Tree - Remember Someone you Love

Next month, Habitat will be planting three trees in front of the Carriage Stone Homes on Green Street in Norristown.

Why not make a gift in honor or in memory of someone you love?  For a tax-deductible gift of $350, one of these trees can be a living reminder of the spirit of someone very special to you.  It will also have a plaque bearing their name near it.

Contact Marianne Lynch marianne@habitatmontco.org to arrange for this special gift.
Assumption College
Thank you Collegiate Challenge!
On behalf of all of us at Habitat, we would like to thank the students of Assumption College in Massachusetts, Montgomery County Community College and the University of Maine at Augusta for coming to build with us during our very own  "March Madness!"  Your enthusiasm and excitement really helped move our projects at 822 Cherry, 830 Cherry and 245 Buttonwood along.

We would also like to thank the following lunch sponsors for feeding this crew:   Christ United Methodist Church in Landsdale, Habitat Staff, Lexis Nexis, Villanova University, Desert Moon Cafe, Brandywine Senior Care, Trader Joe's, St. Peter's of N. Wales youth group.
