Building on Faith!

Habitat often coins the term "building on faith" when talking about constructing homes with various congregations or groups.  Montgomery County is no exception, with three of its last four construction projects being sponsored by faith communities.  In addition, we use it when speaking about the hundreds of volunteers from churches and synagogues that support our work throughout the year with volunteers, special collections and prayer.

Lately though, I have been thinking about the term a bit more broadly.  It is not just a phrase we use to speak about our congregational relations, or the number of faith communities who come out to build with us.  Faith, you see, is the root of our entire operation.  From our supporters who have faith in the fact that we will be responsible with their investments, to the volunteers who put their faith in us to keep them safe, to the homeowners who have faith that we will provide them with a safe, decent place to live, to the County's faith that we will build communities responsibly that will serve their neighbors well - faith is our core tenant.

This year our faith has been challenged.  From the ReStore false starts to the cancellation of the 20th anniversary party, to the bigger impact of the economic squeeze - we have been tested.

As a member of the clergy, I know when your faith is challenged, it is a time of great growth - Habitat is no exception. From these tests, we have looked critically at our organization, its structure, its strengths and its weaknesses and what we have come to realize is this - although challenging, our work is good. It provides a much-needed service for the families who become homeowners, stability for their children, and it brings communities together.  With our faith being tested, we have been given a great gift - the affirmation that Habitat is a strong, vital part of Montgomery County and without it, many families would not be where they are today.

How do I know this?  Faith.  Also, we asked our families what they thought of Habitat a few months ago. Many of them shared their thoughts about Habitat and the impact it has had on their lives.  In this issue of Habichat, we will share some results with you.  I hope you will enjoy their thoughts as much as we did.

In addition this month, we will also share some inspiring stories from our faith partners including the dedication of 203 Linden Avenue and the newest development with some very generous partners at 3104 Linden.

Have a wonderful and joyous holiday season!

A Home for the Holidays

CrowdOn November 22, 2009, Habitat welcomed Susan and her family into the North Hills Community.  Almost 100 people were in attendance to welcome this family home for the Holidays. To see a video of the day by Montgomery News, please click below:

Thanks to hundreds of volunteers putting in more than 3000 hours, Susan's house will be a stable place for her and her children for many years to come.

Church MembersHonored guests to the dedication included members of the sponsor churches, State Representative Josh Shapiro and Joe Sestak's District Director, Bill Walsh.

Many of the volunteers were in attendance, sharing how they "helped build it" with members of Susan's family and her children.

The best part of the day for many was near the end as the crowd thinned.  Isaiah, Susan's eight year-old son, ushered people out saying, "Thank you for coming to my house."

The home was sponsored and built by 13 Episcopal ChurchesChurch Members of the Montgomery Deanery including:

ChristineResults of our Family Survey!

Habitat has been in business more than 20 years in Montgomery County.  As part of reaching that milestone, we wanted to know what our families think homeownership and how it has impacted their lives.  We hear their thoughts often as they drop by the office to pay their mortgage or attend a ReStore sale, but being 20 gave us an opportunity to conduct a comprehensive longitudinal family survey.

The results were pleasantly surprising:

  • 85% of Homeowners believe that the quality of life has improved for their children since moving into their home.
  • 77% of Homeowners have had less behavioral issues with their children since moving into a Habitat home.
  • 92% feel a stronger sense of community moving into their Habitat home.
  • 85% believe that their neighborhoods were positively affected by their Habitat homes.
  • 69% have increased their income since moving in.
  • 85% are able to afford more that they had before dealing with Habitat.
  • 100% feel a greater sense of security about their future.
  • 92% believe that the quality of their family's life have improved.
  • 85% of homeowners have a better opinion of themselves now.

ChristineFor Habitat, this survey was so helpful in strengthening our resolve to serve more families in need in our community.  In additional, it is a great tool for us to use as we move forward in strategic planning for the coming years.

I think one of our homeowner's summed up their experience  best when they said, "The feeling of knowing that I am a Habitat homeowner is
indescribable
.  Life for my family and myself had a great turn around from the moment we were qualified for the program.  Words alone could not describe how thankful we are for the Habitat for Humanity program and its volunteers."
Thank you Lowe's!

 Lowe's
Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County would like to give a big THANK YOU to Lowe's of Plymouth Meeting!  Through their Lowe's Community Heroes program, nine team members from the Plymouth Meeting store showed up at 3104 Summit Avenue in force to help install insulation last week along with members of Congregation Beth Or and St. John's Lutheran Church.  As if that weren't enough, they also provided the insulation for the entire home.

Their generosity helps us keep our costs down in building this home and more importantly, will help our homeowners save money on energy costs with this high-quality R-19 and R-30 fiberglass insulation. This barrier will keep the building warm in winter and cool in the summer!

We are truly grateful for the partnership between Lowe's and Habitat International and feel very honored that our local stores like Plymouth Meeting take this partnership very seriously helping affiltiates like us with their time, treasure and talent.  Thank you Lowe's!

This is a collaborative effort between the Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Montgomery County and Bucks County to help eliminate sub-standard housing in both communities!
Thank you to our snow angel!

When we arrived at our office Monday morning after a snowy weekend, we thought we would have to spend hours shoveling our parking lot.  Thanks to a truly kind individual, our parking lot was already plowed!  Thank you, whoever you are!
